The League of American Bicyclists’ Smart Cycling Program Whether you’re just starting, returning to bicycling after years away, or are an experienced rider wanting to hone your skills,the Smart Cycling program will providetips and techniques to help you get all the benefits of bicycling while staying safe as you ride. The Smart Cycling program is based on bicycling techniques and principles developed by experienced cyclists, educators, and safety experts. It is taught by League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructors. (LCIs)
What is it? Smart Cycling is a 9 hour course divided into four sessions. Each session will give you information and develop skills to increase your confidence and to make riding easier, safer, and more comfortable.
Sessions 1, 2, and 3 can be taken in a classroom with an instructor or as an on-line session taken at your convenience. All three parts must be completed before taking Session 4, the on-bike session.
Session 1, The Basics, covers most of the basic things a rider needs to know to choose the right bike, adjust it to fit, do basic maintenance and be comfortable riding a bicycle. ( 2 hours)
Session 2, Intermediate, covers the rules of the road as they pertain to bicycles. It providestips and techniques for riding a bicycle to get groceries, go to dinner or just to enjoy the community. ( 1 ½ hours)
Session3, Advanced, covers special situations like rural riding, riding in groups, riding long distances, and touring. (1 hour)
Session 4, The On-Bike session, covers basic handling skills, emergency maneuvers, (2 hours) and a practice road ride (2 hours).
What does it cost?
The 3 classroom sessions (or on line session) plus the on bike session are being offered to St. Joseph Parish membersfor the special rate of $25.
